Therapy for Major Life Transitions
Therapy and coaching for women navigating uncertainty, loss and crossroads in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs and online.
Some changes arrive with force — a loss, a diagnosis, a relationship that ends. Others unfold more quietly: a growing sense that the life you’re living no longer quite fits, or that something in you is asking for more than you’ve been allowing.
Whatever has brought you here, you don’t have to make sense of it alone.
When life begins to shift
Major life transitions can arrive suddenly or unfold slowly over time. A relationship ending, a shift in career direction, a health challenge, grief, or a growing sense that the life you have built no longer quite fits who you are becoming.
At these crossroads, it can be hard to know where to begin, let alone what comes next. Your usual ways of coping may not be working in the way they once did. And it can be difficult to explain to others, especially when the change doesn’t have a clear name or a clear timeline.
Having a steady place to land can make more of a difference than you might expect.
When life no longer feels the way it used to
You might recognise yourself in experiences such as:
- A sense of being lost or off track
- Feeling overwhelmed or emotionally shaken
- Grief for what was, or for the life you thought you’d be living
- Constant second‑guessing or overthinking
- Pressure to meet expectations that don’t feel like yours
- Feeling pulled in different directions
- Knowing something needs to change, but not knowing what
These experiences can feel destabilising, lonely, and difficult to explain to others, especially when it seems like everyone else is moving forward. But you don’t have to make sense of this on your own.
“Treasure change: it’s the stuff from which lives are forged. Stop looking for the eternal and immutable, and enter into the daily dance with the transitory.”
Sharon Blackie
Common life transitions people experience
Major transitions can take many forms. Sometimes they arrive suddenly, while others unfold gradually over time. People often reach out for support during moments such as:
- Relationship breakdown, separation, or divorce
- Career crossroads, burnout, or questioning professional direction
- Health diagnoses or significant changes in physical wellbeing
- Grief and loss following the death of someone close
- Becoming a parent or questioning whether to become one
- Relocating or rebuilding life in a new place
- Identity shifts that emerge during midlife or other life stages
Each of these moments can ask us to rethink who we are, what matters most, and how we want to move forward.
Situations I commonly support people through
People seek support at different points in their transition. Some arrive when life has already changed dramatically, while others come when they sense that something is beginning to shift.
Often, this work begins in moments such as deciding whether to stay in or leave a relationship, questioning career direction, navigating burnout, or processing grief. At other times, the transition is quieter: a sense of restlessness, identity changes in midlife, or the feeling that the life you have built no longer fits.
These conversations create space to slow down, understand what is unfolding in your life, and begin shaping the next chapter with greater clarity.
About Elise Clement
I am a psychotherapist, life coach, and facilitator supporting women through significant life transitions, including matrescence, perimenopause, and periods of identity change. My work weaves together holistic therapy, positive psychology coaching, and contemplative traditions to help women understand what they are experiencing and move through these transitions with greater clarity, emotional balance, and self-trust.
How I support people through life transitions
My work is warm, collaborative, and integrative. I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches including Internal Family Systems, positive psychology coaching, mindfulness, and somatic practices to support emotional depth, nervous system regulation, and grounded change.
I work in a way that follows what is emerging for you rather than forcing solutions. Together, we make sense of what your challenges may be asking of you, with curiosity and compassion.
“I’m feeling more confident in the decisions I have to make and I’m seeing more opportunities in day to day life that I didn’t notice previously. Elise is always in the moment right there with me throughout the sessions, her communication style is fantastic, and she has a great depth of knowledge. To be able to work though problems and move myself forwards in my goals has been invaluable.”
Some life transitions, such as becoming a mother or moving through perimenopause, bring their own unique challenges. You can explore more support for those transitions on the Matrescence and Perimenopause & Menopause pages.
If you’d like support
If you are standing at a crossroads and would like support in making sense of what is changing, I invite you to book an initial consultation. This first session gives us time to understand what you are going through, what you are hoping for, and whether working together feels right.
Questions people often ask during times of change
Is this for me if I feel overwhelmed but don’t know why?
Yes. Overwhelm doesn’t always come with a clear explanation. Sometimes it is the body and mind responding to change, loss, or uncertainty before we can put words to it. You don’t need to have clarity to begin; that is something we can discover together.
Can you help with both personal and professional challenges?
Yes. Personal and professional life rarely exist in separate boxes. What happens at work affects how you feel at home and vice versa. Our work often touches both areas, because that is how real life unfolds.
Can you help me if I’m unsure whether I want to become a parent?
Yes. This is a deeply personal and often emotionally complex question that many women feel they are supposed to already have answers to. Rather than pushing toward a yes-or-no answer, we explore what lies beneath the question: your values, fears, longings, and the kind of life you want to shape.
Is this therapy or coaching?
It is both. I integrate therapeutic depth with coaching clarity. This means we make space for your emotions and experiences while also supporting forward movement when you are ready.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is a gentle place to start. You can share what has been weighing on you, what feels confusing, and what you hope might change. There is no pressure to have the right words. We simply begin with where you are.
I live and work on the unceeded land of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. I bow to the wisdom of the custodians and their elders, past present and emerging.
